2020 Kumeu River, Hunting Hill Chardonnay, Kumeu, New Zealand

Description

Hunting Hill is by nature a powerful, well-textured wine, rich and round; the legs coming down the sides of my tasting glass are an anticipation of the sheer concentration and intensity. The nose is deep and generous with aromas of stone fruit, white spicy peach, pear and refreshing melon, with an extremely appealing stony minerality. On the palate, there is weight on the entry, almost creaminess, balanced by stimulating acidity and a salty tang. Flavours of lemon pith, limes, ripe peach and a flinty element adds complexity to the whole, which offers a delectable mouthfeel and persistence. The wine is very approachable now, but this wine does age beautifully and there is certainly potential to do so this vintage.

About this wine

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
