2020 Kumeu River, Coddington Chardonnay, Kumeu, New Zealand

Description

The 2020 vintage is another beautiful wine from this vineyard. The Coddington shows a little more richness than the Estate and the Hunting Hill. The first 3 words in my notes were depth, spice and richness. Lemon and lime, apple and stone fruits show on the nose and the mid palate lovingly wrapped with just a hint of oak notes and minerality. The lengthy finish continues to remind you of the beauty this wine offers. I would give it a year after arrival and then drink it over the next 5-10 years, if you can keep it that long.

Rebecca Gibb MW 93/100
Another typically weighty expression from Kumeu's Coddington vineyard, the 2020 Chardonnay Coddington fills the midpalate with its density and breadth. It is a wine of clarity, the oak-derived smoky, nutty notes providing a savory layer over nectarine and lemon meringue. However, this is not a wine that needs multiple flavor descriptors; it's a wine of texture. Expect the smooth, mellow mouthfeel to be followed up with lovely precision and sinew on the lengthy, smoky finish.Drink 2022 - 2031Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.com.com (Nov 2020)

Rich, opulent chardonnay with ripe apple, lime, nectarine, white peach and wet slate and mineral characters. A weighty, textural wine with a strong fruit focus supported by savoury, yeast lees and subtle oak flavoursDrink 2021 - 2027Bob Campbell, therealreview.com (Jul 2021)

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
