Champagne Henri Giraud, MV16, Grand Cru, Aÿ, Brut

Description

The backbone of Henri Giraud’s selection, the MV wines express their particular vintage whilst also maintaining the Giraud style. Fermented in oak.

80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, with a third of the base wine coming from the 2016 vintage. This is a wonderfully, rich, complex vinous champagne. On the nose you are hit with layers of strawberries and cream, mixing with almonds and citrus notes, then warm toasty buttery notes to finish. On the palate the racy acidity holds up the rich texture. The bouche is soft and persistent with notes of apricots, honey, lemon tart, smoke and strawberries all culminating into a long toasty finish which lingers beautifully and persistently. Drink now – 2040.

Jancis Robinson MW 17.5/20
80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. The house's multi-vintage blend, based on the 2016 vintage deepened by the addition of one-third older wine from a perpetual reserve (solera system)Deep gold. Not yet released but bursting with energy and interest. I'd very happily drink this now. There is real structure to this wine. Edgy but satisfying, and should probably appeal to a wider range of wine drinkers than the defiantly oak-influenced Argonne. Really very fine.Drink 2021 - 2028jancis_robinson_mw, JancisRobinson.com (Mar 2021)

Rich aromas and flavours of baked cherry, gingerbread, salted almond, lime blossom and candied ginger are set on the satinlike mousse of this expressive Champagne. Vivid acidity is finely integrated, providing power as well as definition to the opulent display of flavors, but this is graceful and finely knit overall, with a long, luxurious finish. Drink now through 2026. 2,900 cases made.Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator (Oct 2021)

The MV 16 is bright, fresh and airy and yet has the natural richness of Aÿ that Giraud fans have come to expect. Apricot, tangerine oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, chamomile and dried flowers all meld together in a creamy, ample Champagne that hits all the right notes. A Champagne of towering presence, the MV 16 is classy, understated and undeniably alluring. It is also one of the most impressive Champagnes I have ever tasted from Claude Giraud. Even in the early going, the 70% new oak is so well-integrated. This set of new releases is full of highlights, but the MV 16 is especially fine. Don't miss it! Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Lots of ripe apples, peaches, brioche, yeast, white pepper and bread dough. Mustard flowers, too. Full-bodied, yet so energetic and intense. So much going on. Subtle and intense. Light nuts and spices. Fine and angular with so much tension. Tight at the end. Mineral and iodine, too. Weightless on the palate. Better in a year or two, but already really excellent. 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay. One for the cellar.james_suckling, jamessuckling_com (May 2021)

About this wine

Henri Giraud Champagne

Claude Giraud is the 12th generation of the Giraud-Hémart family to preside over the family business and produce Henri Giraud Champagne in Aÿ. The Henri Giraud Fût de Chêne is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, using the 'Petit Pinot' clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. The wine is 100% oak fermented, a practice not commonly used elsewhere in Champagne, the notable exponents being Bollinger (for their vintage Champagnes), Alfred Gratien and Krug.
