2023 Berry Bros. & Rudd New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by Isabel Estate, Marlborough

Description

It is such a delight to work with Isabel Estate for our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Winemaker Jeremy McKenzie has harnessed the pungency of this grape variety, resulting in a wine with an impressively restrained, pure nose and just a delicate touch of tomato leaf. The palate has subtle notes of peach and passionfruit, but all is washed over by a fine, river-pebble freshness. A mouthwatering sea-salt note lingers on the deliciously invigorating finish.

About this wine

Sauvignon Blanc

An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp  Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.

Isabel Estate

Isabel Estate was established by Mike and Robyn Tiller in 1980 with the ambition of producing premium, classic grape varieties in Marlborough, New Zealand's largest wine area, which is situated at the top of the South Island. Prior to the 1994 vintage, Isabel Estate supplied Marlborough’s leading wine producers - including Cloudy Bay - with grapes, but since then has produced its own single-vineyard wines. The estate is now owned by the Australian drinks company, Pinnacle, which has focused on investment in the vineyards and winery since it took over in 2014. Ex-Villa Maria winemaker Jeremy McKenzie is now in charge of the wines and is dedicated to ensuring the high quality that is synonymous with this estate.
