2023 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14% Merlot; 5% Petit Verdot; 2% Cabernet Franc.

The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is 15% higher than last year; the character of this grape variety drives the palate. The Merlot, which feels very plump, adds some presence, but overall, the core of the wine is quite linear and direct. It has subtle cassis and cigar box suspended in an airy architecture. The tannins are not penetrating, and it is the lift and purity of the Cabernet which carries the wine happily to the finish. The alcohol is a refreshingly modest 13.3%, and 30% of the overall crop was used for this wine.

Margaux

If Pauillac is the bastion of ‘traditional’ Red Bordeaux, Margaux represents its other facet in producing wines that are some of the region’s most sensual and alluring. The largest commune in the Médoc, it encompasses the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labaude, in addition to the village of Margaux itself. Its finest examples are paragons of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.
