2022 Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy

Description

This is from two parcels, with one hectare by the château and half a hectare by the road, harvested on 1st and 6th September, respectively. This is a more discrete expression of this terroir because the vineyard team work hard to manage this aspect. It is still chunky on the bottom of the palate, but with a quite a lot of florality.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 88-90/100
The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is very tight on the nose and has a tough time following the more expressive Corton Clos du Roi. It feels bashful and sultry. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly obdurate tannins, a bit static, with more flesh needed toward the finish. A bit over-awed by other cuvées from Vougeraie.Drink 2026 - 2036Neil Martin, Vinous.com.com (January 2024)

Fruit from the plot in the upper part of the Clos retains 50% of the stems, while the lower block is destemmed. A very light reduction. An attractive balanced red fruit, along with some chocolate notes, and Sylvie suggests a little tobacco which I can now see. A good thread of acidity throughout, not especially demonstrative despite the nuances.Drink 2032 - 2040Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy_com (November 2023)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
