Description
The fruit here comes from Barolo’s La Serra and Neviglie, in Roero. The parcel from La Serra offers power and structure, while Neviglie and its sandy soils give convivial fruitiness and perfume. A portion is aged in the estate’s newest Austrian oak botti for six months (before they can be used for the Barolo), imparting sweet spice and body, with the rest kept back to ensure the balance is protected. Barbera is so joyful with a lick of new oak, and this is a brilliant expression.

About this wine
Barbera
Barbera is planted extensively in Piedmont and south-west Lombardy and accounts for over 50% of the wine produced in the region. The majority is sold simply as Barbera del Piemonte, but the best wines are the DOCs, Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti. It ripens late (after Dolcetto but before Nebbiolo).

Marcarini
Few views in Barolo can compete with the one from Marcarini’s terrace in La Morra. Encompassing most of the region’s communes and vineyards, one only has to look south-east to see Barolo’s modest size, cradled in the Italian Alps. It is fitting that Marcarini occupies this prime location; the winery is built underneath La Morra’s medieval watchtower, a signpost to the Marchetti family cantina that’s visible across the region.
