2021 Berry Bros. & Rudd Pomerol by Château Feytit-Clinet, Bordeaux

Description

This blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc comes from younger vines at Château Feytit-Clinet. The nose is plush and expressive, its bright raspberry and raspberry-leaf aromas sweetened by notes of black cherries and cedar spice. The palate brings smooth, mouth-coating layers of damsons and blackcurrants which are enriched with dark chocolate and soft, velvety tannins. This is textbook Pomerol. A mouth-watering burst of redcurrant acidity reminds us of the fresher, earlier-drinking style of this vintage. This is moreish, elegant and delightfully versatile.

About this wine

Chateau Feytit-Clinet

Situated on the western part of the plateau in the Pomerol wine appellation in Bordeaux, Château Feytit-Clinet belonged to the  stable of Moueix family wines until 1999. Jeremy Chasseuil arrived at Château Feytit-Clinet in time for the stunning 2000 vintage. Previously a wine-maker at Château La Dominique, his efforts since have resulted in some very impressive wines. Soils here are rich in clay which favours the Merlot grape rather than the Cabernets, and Jeremy has exploited them perfectly to produce succulent wines, never over-extracted, and full of charm and distinction.

Pomerol

With 150 or so producers and roughly 740 hectares of vineyards, the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations is home to myriad bijou domaines – many making little more than 1,000 cases per annum. If the topography and architecture of Pomerol are typical, the style of its wines is anything but. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay extending across the raised plateau of Pomerol from the boundary of St Emilion.
