Description
An impressively layered nose combines violets, spice, earth, plum and dark berries and more subtle wood influence. There is good size and muscle to the rich, velvety and mouth-coating medium-weight flavours that possess fine mid-palate concentration along with evident power on the lightly mineral-inflected, balanced and highly persistent finish that also reflects just a touch of warmth.

0.75 ha. 50- to 75-year-old vines (the youngest, of seven years, go into the Dom Tawse Gevrey-Chambertin). 80% new oak. Cask sample.Pale ruby. Red fruits – strawberry, red cherry and redcurrant. Sweet and round on the palate – although less exuberant than I expected. Quite full bodied nevertheless, and very satisfying with suave tannins. Full and substantial without being a brute. 10% whole bunch, 70% new wood, 7 barrels. Red to crimson in colour, lightly reductive. This is a wine which is sitting back in a reflective manner, but the constituent parts are all there. More in a savoury style than lush fruit. I think it will work very well, with good keeping qualities, but it is less demonstrative up front. The finish shows the class. The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru contains 10% whole bunches with 70% new oak. This is much more reduced than the Mazoyères so is difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good structure and symmetry, a keen thread of acidity and gently building red fruit leading to a complex and persistent finish. Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Domaine Tawse
Our relationship with Domaine Tawse goes back to the days of Domaine Maume, which was purchased in 2012 by Canadian Moray Tawse. The domaine is today run by Englishman Mark Fincham. A thoughtful and articulate winemaker, Mark can be relied upon for an original take on the vintage, and on the state of vinous play in Burgundy generally. Mark farms the estate biodynamically.
