2021 Langhe Nebbiolo, Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This multi-vineyard blend comes from holdings around Serralunga d’Alba and nearby Roddino, which has the same calibre of white soils. Fermentation takes place in cement, with a shorter maceration to retain fruity purity, aromatics and drinkability. Six months spent in large Slovenian oak botti give it a composed, silky sheen. There’s juicy fruit clarity here, alongside high-toned spice and floral perfume. The finish has notes of tangy purple fruits and a chalky minerality.

Critics reviews

James Suckling 90/100
Aromas of strawberries, raspberries and spices with dried flower undertones. Medium-bodied, juicy and savoury with supple tannins and vivid acidity. Fruity and attractive. Drink nowjames_suckling, jamessuckling_com (July 2023)

Giovanni Rosso makes a fine, entry-level red. The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is slightly spicy and tart with a wide range of fun aromas from wild berry to bitter almond and blue flower. These elements make for a vibrant bouquet. There is aniseed and blood orange too. The varietal detail that can be achieved with a youthful wine like this is amazing.Drink 2023 - 2028monica_larner, Wine Advocate (August 2023)

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Giovanni Rosso

Davide Rosso took over from his father, Giovanni, in the early 2000s. He has since risen quickly in reputation as one of Piedmont’s greatest producers. He may not have the uninterrupted winemaking history of some of his famous neighbours, but he is the envy of many: he has some of the most desirable vineyards in Barolo – Serralunga d’Alba, Cerretta, Serra – showcasing the vivid terroir of his beloved hometown.
