Julia Harding MW 16.5/20
Two-thirds of the fruit is hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed. Barrel-fermented with ambient yeasts and full solids, like the Heytesbury. This is referred to by Vasse Felix (and on the back label) as their Premier Chardonnay. Most of the barrels go through malo. Aged 10 months in French oak (34% new) and seven months on lees in tank. TA 6.7 g/l, pH 3.16. Bottled June 2021.Lightly smoky mineral, gently sulphidic, and not especially fruity on the nose but deep in citrus on the palate, with a touch of lime, and definite but clean-edge oak influence. Moderate concentration and length. Lots of freshness.Drink now to 2026julia_harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (September 2022)
Huon Hooke 93/100
Light to medium yellow colour leads into a bouquet of real complexity and expressiveness. Toasted nuts, nougat, mixed spices, smoky oak, creamy lees and stone fruit aromas are neatly combined. The wine is not big or blousy but refined and tautly composed, intense and long with good concentration but no hint of heaviness. A slight tannin grip at the end. An excellent chardonnay.Drink 2022 - 2031Huon Hooke, therealreview.com (Mar 2022)
Erin Larkin 95/100
I think sometimes this wine is overshadowed by the Heytesbury, which sits above it. However, it is an error to underestimate this wine. It may not have the funk nor the phenolic framework that the Heytesbury has, however it is possessed of a poise, polish and class that enables it to sit well in any glass. The 2020 vintage was warm, and the wines produced that year have been across the board excellent. In the 2020 Chardonnay, we see a combination of experienced hand and fortunate season in confluence, which brings us a wine that speaks of salted crushed nuts, pure apple, peach and even juniper, saltbush, a touch of kelp and layers of briney acidity. A brilliant wine.Drink 2022 - 2030Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)
About this wine
Chardonnay
Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

Margaret River
Located on the most south-westerly point of Australia, the Margaret River region sprang to life during the 1960s and 1970s as a result of Professor Harold Olmo’s and Dr John Gladstone’s research into its viticultural potential. Vasse Felix was planted in 1967, Moss Wood in 1970 and Cullen in 1971; since then the plantings have grown exponentially, and the number of wineries has increased six-fold.
