Description
Twenty percent of this wine was made in barrel this year, with the remainder in tank to preserve the purity and freshness of the fruit. There is a pronounced spicy character here, which Anatole de la Brosse says is typical of the vineyard. Beneath the spice is rich and perfumed fruit, which follows on the palate with pleasing generosity, caressing tannins and a fine, refreshing finish.

Vincenzo Arnese 94/100
Deliciously inviting nose of raspberries, mint and black pepper - perfect typicity for Cabernet Franc. Abundance of ripe blackberry and a hint of cassis, this is a particular, post-modern style of Atlantic wine. While light in body, the 2020 Les Coudraies is a seductive style that enters with a certain amount of juicy fat and then pow! It reveals itself fully in its salty, taut and firm with a limestone-derived freshness and chalky texture. You can expect excellent purity of fruit, transparency and a particular delicacy as it floats through the mouth, which is surprising when you find out the alcohol is 14%. It’s really rather good if you like your wines precise and taut, considering it's only the second vintage from this former business consultant. It's one to watch. In 2019, Anatole de la Brosse, a Champagne native and business consultant in Paris, bought a domaine off a retiring vigneron. The vendor had always sold his grapes to negociants, and he needed a single employee working the 15ha of vineyard alone. De la Brosse attempted to do both his job in Paris and revive this Saumur-Champigny estate, but in 2021, he dedicated his life to his vines and has a small team as well as a consultant, Michel Chevré of Clos de l'Ecotard. The vineyards are in organic conversion, and biodynamic farming is practised. Drink 2022 - 2035Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.com.com (August 2022)

About this wine
Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Franc is widely planted in Bordeaux and is the most important black grape grown in the Loire. In the Médoc it may constitute up to 15% of a typical vineyard - it is always blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is used to add bouquet and complexity to the wines. It is more widely used in St.Emilion where it adapts well to the cooler and moister clay soils - Cheval Blanc is the most famous Cabernet Franc wine in the world, with the final blend consisting of up to 65% of the grape.

Saumur-Champigny
Saumur-Champigny is an Anjou-Saumur appellation noted for the uncomplicated, fruit-forward character of its Cabernet Franc red wines grown on the sand over chalky tuffeau soils. The wines are aged predominantly in old oak or inert vessels to give a good-value, early-drinking style. Château du Hureau is a consistently good source.
