Description
The domaine’s 0.33 hectares are a stone’s throw from its Le Chambertin. Previously, the two were blended. But the brothers prefer to separate the two to highlight their difference: Clos de Bèze will often seem more seductive on first taste, illustrated here by a rich, spicy and concentrated bouquet, with an explosive and fruit-driven perfume of ripe cherry. Drink 2035-2060.

Allen Meadows 93-96/100
(from a .33 ha parcel). A wonderfully spicy nose freely offers up its notably riper yet very fresh aromas of violet, rose petal, anise, red currant and a subtle gamy character. The palate impression of the equally sized and powerful flavors is a bit less mineral-driven but there is even better density of material that also serves to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long finale. This beauty is certainly built-to-age but it’s not so backward and youthfully austere that it couldn’t be approached after 7 or so years. 2035+allen_meadows, burghound_com.com (Jan 2022)
Jasper Morris MW 93-96/100
Both the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze weigh in at 13.6%. The colour is a little darker and the nose has a blacker fruit, without the reductive note currently seen in the Chambertin. This is a thicker textured wine but just as you think it might be a little on the heavy side it becomes more nuanced and the fruit lightens up. Decent acidity to round it off, not quite the same majesty but plenty of depth. Very good.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy_com (January 2022)
About this wine
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
