Description

This always presents a “wow” moment in tastings – like licking a stone. Aux Réas sits in the curious protrusion into the Nuits appellation, on the lower slopes. It’s influenced by that combe, not Vosne’s. It shares the same limestone attack as Charmotte, on the opposite slope of the combe. It’s energetic and precise, almost the definition of mineral. Drink 2023-2032.

The 2020 Beaune Les Avaux 1er Cru includes 20% whole bunch this year. It is well-defined on the nose with brambly red fruit, peony and undergrowth, a touch of iodine emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and sensual, perhaps just needing a little more grip on the finish. No whole bunch here, which is now normal, as not needed on the active limestone. Rich intense black purple. This is massive yet not over the top, plenty of energy, very dark raspberry fruit a little reductive but this is pretty impressive. Light salinity here. About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
