2020 Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Evocelles, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy

Description

Evocelles was hit by a cataclysmic hailstorm in 2021; there’ll be hardly any wine next year. The three hectares of vines are at the top, touching the treeline (so of interest to the local wild boar). There’s Brochon spice, tight fruit and tannin. With 30% whole-bunch, this is a wine of vitality, finishing with some white pepper.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 90-92/100
(from a huge holding of 3.15 ha of vines on the Brochon side; 50% whole clusters). Reduction masks everything but subtle floral nuances. More interesting are the notably finer and more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess both a lovely texture and underlying tension while delivering fine length on the youthfully austere finale. This too is an excellent Gevrey villages that is firm enough to reward a decade of keeping.2030+allen_meadows, burghound_com.com (Jan 2022)

50% whole bunch from the old vines. Fine mid purple. There is a certain tension here, some cherry kernel notes, significant intensity with good acidity. The stems give a little lifted tingle at the back. Not massive but fine and with length.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy_com (January 2022)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
