Although this wine weighs in at an impressive 15.5% alcohol, there is a leafy aspect to the bouquet, hinting at something more complex. Ronan Laborde explains that the berries were small at harvest and, along with the Cabernet Sauvignon (which thrives on Clinet’s gravels), there is a bright, tannic freshness here. The plush palate is clean as a whistle, with mocha and the capsicum note of the bouquet. This has all the personality you could want from this style of Pomerol.

Merlot

The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.
