2020 Gevrey-Chambertin, Lavaux-St-Jacques, 1er Cru, Domaine Tawse, Burgundy

Description

The vineyard sits on the northern slope on the entrance to the Combe de Lavaux. Most vines are planted from bottom to top. Lower down is colder, the top gets the afternoon sun. There’s a lot of limestone, contributing to the wines’ more sculpted style. The fruit is beautifully healthy this year, and less aromatically heady than 2019. Drink 2026-2038.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 91-93/100
Noticeable wood influence is present on the lightly mentholated nose of plum liqueur, kirsch and whiffs of the sauvage and forest floor. There is more volume and apparent power to the bigger-bodied flavors that enjoy fine mid-palate density on the austere, mineral-driven and impressively persistent finale. This firm effort will need the better part of 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee. Worth a look. 2032+allen_meadows, burghound_com.com (Jan 2022)

Destemmed, two new barrels in four. A slightly deeper purple compared to Champeaux. One part predates the first war, the other between the wars. Old style high-quality pinot tordu plants which need to be worked by hand. Very rich purple, a little torrefaction. This has very impressive weight and needs much longer elevage. Some cherry fruit shows an engaging freshness. Good acidity, the tannins are well integrated. Much more to come!Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy_com (January 2022)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
