2020 Mazis-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Tawse, Burgundy

Description

This is, arguably, the best expression of Mazis. The oldest vines – 75-80 years old – make up 12% of the blend, going in as whole berries. The rest is destemmed. There’s always something a little untamed about this wine’s profile; Mark tries to put the brakes on when he can, but its heady garrigue notes are hard to contain. Drink 2030-2045.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 92-94/100
(from Mazis-Bas). Here too the nose is attractively perfumed with its array of various red berries, anise, spice, violet and sauvage whiffs. The supple, delicious and mouth coating big-bodied flavors contrast with the markedly tannic and muscular finish that flashes focused power and excellent persistence. Patience required.2035+allen_meadows, burghound_com.com (Jan 2022)

Picked 2nd September at 13.5%. 80% new wood. 10% whole bunch. Lovely mid purple, not the deepest. More reserved than Mazoyères but clearly with an amazing depth. Crystalline purity, a whole bevy of fine red fruits underlined by a little torrefaction. It is really backward still but with extraordinary length. Very stylish. And actually then a huge weight of fruit returns even later.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy_com (January 2022)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
