2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Pianrosso, Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Coming from an 11.7 hectare plot on Galestro soils, the Pianrosso is texturally impressive and remarkably balanced. This is very complete, with a salty, gravelly edge that feels like the hallmark of the estate immaculately melded into the wine. There are beautiful, vibrant liquorice top notes, with sweet blackberry and blackcurrant alongside crushed raspberry and fresh herbs. Some gentle wafts of smoke also help build towards an enchantingly complex bouquet.

Boasting great depth and extreme elegance, the drop-dead gorgeous Ciacci Piccolomini Pianrosso delivers crushed raspberry, succulent Morello cherry, star anise and crushed mint flavors while aromas of eucalyptus, wild rose, new leather and forest floor continuously lift out of the glass. It’s a smooth, stunning wine, with taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that lend great aging potential and energy. Absolutely stunning.Drink 2029 - 2044Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com (September 2023)

Sweet berries and cherries on the nose, together with fresh violet and lilac notes. Full body with juicy tannins and a flavorful finish that opens on the palate. Lots of ripe cherry flavor. Tar, too. A rich and layered Pianrosso. One of the bigger, riper wines of the vintage, but still holds true.Try in 2027james_suckling, jamessuckling_com (September 2023)

The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens to a wide and all-encompassing bouquet with dried cherry or cherry pie with the crust, plum tart and rose potpourri. There are evident oak tones, but they fold into underbrush, grilled herb and the generous texture of this wine. Likewise, the 15% alcohol content also neatly disappears into the wine's fleshy fruit consistency. For sure, this is a wine that needs more bottle evolution in order to hone in on the silkiness and pretty freshness of such an important Sangiovese.Paolo Bianchini and his family at Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona farm organically across their mighty holdings of 55.5 hectares in one of the most beautiful spots imaginable, especially at sunset. The soils see a lot of schistic galestro clay, and the vines thrive at a well-ventilated 240 to 360 meters in elevation facing Monte Amiata and far-reaching southern exposures over a wide forested panorama. That beautiful sense of openness is something you taste in the wines, even more so with some bottle age.Drink 2026 - 2048monica_larner, Wine Advocate (December 2023)

Aged in Slavonian oak for 36 months, Pianrosso is a selection from the self-titled vineyard: 11 hectares in the lower southeast of Montalcino. The grapes were harvested between 11 September and 4 October 2019, suggesting a classic vintage. It shines for its Earl Grey tea aroma combined with dark cherry, cinnamon, liquorice, and a floral bouquet. The fruit character is very dark and precise; gorgeous in this vintage. Full bodied, thick and velvety with firm, long yet integrated acidity, it tapers on the finish but this should be considered a signifier of its elegance.Drink 2024 - 2034Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter (September 2023)

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Located in the south east of the Montalcino region close to the beautiful medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, the estate of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona can trace its roots back to the 17th century. The Ciacci family owned the estate for over a hundred years until the death of Countess Elda Ciacci in 1985. As the Countess had no children, she left the property to her long standing and well-respected estate manager Giuseppe Bianchini. His hard work and dedication have been continued by his son and daughter, Paolo and Lucia, who have developed the property and wines to their current respected position. They have a total holding of 220 hectares of the rolling Tuscan hills bordered by the Orcia River which helps moderate the temperature of this hot and dry part of the region. 53 hectares are devoted to the wonderful Sangiovese Grosso grape which produce the Brunello di Montalcino together with small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
