Description
You have to work on this in the glass, but it’s well worth the effort. It’s initially reticent on the nose, but what emerges are the purest red fruit aromas – très Pinot. Its fresh acidity and resistant tannins speak of the vineyard’s 300-metre altitude and limestone mother-rock. Drink 2026-2032.

Fresh purple with a pinker edge. The nose speaks as much of Vougeraie as of Corton, with a suave texture through the middle. This Clos du Roi stops just short of grand cru for me, but the fruit is attractive and accessible.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com (December 2020)
Neal Martin MW 92-94/100
The 2019 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru comes from just under half a hectare of vines and is matured with 35% whole bunch. It has a well-defined bouquet that is earthier than Vougeraie’s other crus, conveying a little more energy than the Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, the stems imparting a touch of pepperiness, and the finish is quite tensile, displaying good persistence. This is an elegant Clos du Roi that should age well in bottle.Neil Martin, Vinous.com
About this wine
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
