2019 Volnay, Les Lurets, 1er Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

A dry year has again benefitted this vineyard, whose heavier soils help retain water. It’s located just below Caillerets, and it’s tempting to feel that there’s extra finesse from that proximity. Certainly, there’s weight, and complexity, too; this is a wine whose gravitas creeps up on you. At heart, it’s still a Volnay, with a gentle peony perfume.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 89-91/100
The 2019 Volnay Les Lurets 1er Cru comes from a single parcel of 30-year-old vines. One barrel was quite reduced; another offered brambly red fruit, undergrowth and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity, and nicely focused, leading to an understated finish. Fine, although I think the Volnay Village is just as good. Quite an intense mid purple colour here, with a fruit intensity to the nose. The darker side of raspberry. Very significant fruit weight, good acid balance too, a big step up from the village. Plenty left in reserve at the finish.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com (December 2020)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
