2019 Barolo, Ester Canale Rosso, Vigna Rionda, Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont, Italy

Description

The Barolo Ester Canale Vigna Rionda Barolo is a selection of Davide’s oldest vines, all planted in 1946. The 2019 followed traditional vinification, with over three years spent in specially-made French oak botti. The nose is brimming with notes of blood orange, wild mint, anise and truffle. The palate is pure elegance, but with great depth and detail: wild strawberries encased in firm, yet deviously sweet tannins. The finish persists with mineral complexity, but only time will reveal the true complexities and delights of this hallowed site.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 18/20
Lustrous, youthful mid ruby. Amazing depth and precision on the nose. Crushed gravel stones over red fruit. Perfumed and deep and with a touch of black tea leaves. Compact raspberry fruit on the palate with a layer of finely ground, firm yet super-elegant tannins and supple, lifted acidity. Lots of substance. Tannic fireworks. Full spread on the finish.Drink 2026– 2044Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (November 2022)

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Giovanni Rosso

Davide Rosso took over from his father, Giovanni, in the early 2000s. He has since risen quickly in reputation as one of Piedmont’s greatest producers. He may not have the uninterrupted winemaking history of some of his famous neighbours, but he is the envy of many: he has some of the most desirable vineyards in Barolo – Serralunga d’Alba, Cerretta, Serra – showcasing the vivid terroir of his beloved hometown.
