Description

This enigmatic wine is unique in Burgundy, courtesy largely of the vineyard’s very chalky soil. It abuts the northern wall of Clos Vougeot, yet it’s definitively a white wine terroir. It’s always taut and tensile in youth, with marked acidity. The warm summer added a smoky nose and hints of cumin spice. It’ll need time to knit together. Drink 2024-2035.

Beautiful pale colour with the lightest of green inflections. Really perfumed, so many layers here because there is a lively identity behind the immediate sunshine perfume. As much as the more exotic part of the fruit wants to lift itself above the parapet, the Cistercian strictness of the terroir reins it back in. The 2019 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot, the 0.83-hectare monopole of the domaine, was picked three times. It was showing a bit of reduction on the nose when I visited. The rounded palate features lime cordial, tinned apricot and plenty of passion fruit and pineapple notes toward the finish. This is a delicious and seductive white Vougeot, although it is missing just a little tension and intellect overall.Neil Martin, Vinous.com
