2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Alessandro considers this to be similar to 2010 and 2016. The wine is noticeably darker than the 2018, and only vines over 25 years old are used. The bouquet is full of dark fruit, tar, ink, wood and cigar smoke, which all wraps up nicely in a ripe, sweet top note. The palate is full of luxurious and plump Californian cherry fruit, with a hint of cinnamon and warm cupboard spice. This has plenty of presence on the palate, paired with lovely freshness. The tannins are tensile and humming, and control the wine’s glacial flow across the palate. While alcohol is high at 15%, this feels remarkably cool.

Walter Speller 17.5/20
Dark, youthful ruby. Very closed and brooding with only hints of perfumed raspberry, tea leaves and oak. Generous and composed at the same time on the palate. A layer of suave cherry and raspberry fruit lined with quite powerful tannins that demand more time. Carries its 15% with ease. Closes up on the finish and in need of more time.Drink 2026 - 2038Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (October 2023)

Lots of dried fruit, such as figs and dried cherries, followed by tree bark, rosemary and a hint of sandalwood. Full-bodied, creamy palate with a solid tannin texture. Wonderful length. Dense and opulent.Better after 2029james_suckling, jamessuckling_com (September 2023)

Aromas of tobacco, licorice and resin come to the forefront on this robust red. The tobacco and licorice notes follow through to the brawny, concentrated palate along with primary flavors recalling black cherry extract and liquor-soaked prune. Solid, close-grained tannins provide firm support and leave a rather drying finish.Drink 2028 - 2034Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com (November 2023)

The 2019 is a vintage of balance, somewhere between 2016, 2013 and 2010. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which suffers in warmer vintages, performed very well and Il Poggione is a great example of the harmony of the area's wines in this vintage. Fruity at first sniff, it becomes more restrained later, with black cherry, violet, leather, graphite vibrancy and its typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are extracted but velvety, underlined by an almost zesty acidity.2024 - 2034Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com (September 2023)

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower and autumnal leaf. On a second nose, you get dark licorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are powdery and dry. I recommend a medium-term drinking window as a result. You do feel the powerful 15% alcohol content in this ample 200,000-bottle release.Il Poggione is one of the headline estates in the vicinity of the picturesque hamlet of Sant'Angelo in Colle. It farms vineyards over a wide span of 150 to 450 meters above sea level. The vines are between 25 and 59 years old.Drink 2025 - 2038monica_larner, Wine Advocate (December 2023)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today.Drink 2026 - 2040eric_guido, Vinous.com (November 2023)

Il Poggione

Il Poggione is a winery steeped in history with its origins dating back to the late 1800s. Owned by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi , it is situated  below the beautiful hilltop town of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation characterised by temperate, yet well-ventilated micro-climate. This benefits the grapes by maintaining refreshing acidity levels and extending their ripening time. Father and son winemaking team Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci coax the best from these privileged vineyard sites; they are also proponents of a traditional wine-making style which includes submerging the cap with frequent pump overs (for more colour and tannin extraction), and ageing in large casks (so that wood flavours remain subtle and do not interfere with the natural expression of the Sangiovese and the Sant’Angelo terroir). The Riserva bottling, made in the finest vintages, receives at least one year extra ageing in French oak casks. The typical style is intense, full-bodied, powerful, packed with dark fruit, menthol, sweet smoke, cocoa and spice flavours and a hint of earthiness. In the best vintages the wines demonstrate extraordinary development in bottle. Even better, prices have remained very reasonable, considering the superb quality of the wine. Poggione’s  straight Brunello is one of the most fairly-priced, cellar worthy wines of the appellation. This is a benchmark property for fine, traditionally made Brunellos capable of ageing superbly.
