Description
In the past Capbern was sometimes included in Calon Ségur, but the clays are not as complex, so now the wine is made entirely separately. Initially, the fruit is bright and fresh before leading into a glossy palate which also shows some generosity. The wine finishes with some nicely judged notes of iodine and blackcurrant. Drink 2025-2035.

Jancis Robinson MW 17/20
62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. pH 3.75, 60% new oak. Barrel sample. Deepest purple. Dark and stony, lovely slaty nose. Firm, chalky, dense and still with lovely freshness. Not the same richness as the 2009 but with great purity and definition. More serious, less seduction. Long and great structure. So pure in its dark cassis fruit. Cool with a touch of liquorice on the finish. Drink 2023 – 2029 julia_harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (spring 2019)

About this wine
Chateau Capbern
Chateau Capbern Gasqueton in Bordeaux has been in the ownership of the Gasqueton family, owners of the 3rd classed Growth Ch Calon Ségur, for 10 generations. It is a Cru Bourgeois, located close to the best part of St Estephe, and has 41 hectares under vine. Unsurprisingly in view of the excellence of Calon Ségur at present this is a well-run estate, producing wines of charm and structure capable of lasting comfortably 10-20 years in good vintages. The fruit is all hand-harvested and oak is used judiciously, with only one-third of the barrels new each year. 10,000 cases are produced and in the context of the current pricing of top Bordeaux we regard this as offering excellent value for money.
