2018 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Brilliant garnet, an instantly captivating nose of black and red forest fruits, plum, rose and finely managed oak spice. The palate is seamless, silky and sophisticated. The tannins sweet and polished, layers of glossy berry fruits, plump cherries and roasted mocha spices support a slight savoury note pierced with ivy leaf, and the smoky edges of graphite. The 2018 yielded fresher wines in Bolgheri, Le Serra Nuove shows delicacy but also immense detail and complexity. Discerning, expressive and seductive, immediately enjoyable now but is tightly coiled, and will improve in cellar. Drink 2021 - 2032.

A recognisable Bordeaux blend with its structure, tannins and velvet texture. Softly brushed vanilla bean and cocoa shavings alongside the raspberry fruits. This is excellent quality, approachable with a good few hours in a carafe now, or give it another few years to further soften the tannins. Le Serre Nuove comes from younger vines or those on lighter, sandier soils, translating into a fruit-focused, unfussy wine that was first released in this vintage through the Place in March 2021, making this my second tasting.Drink 2022 to 2030jane_anson_mw, janeanson_com (October 2021)

Rich and packed with black cherry, blackberry and plum flavors shaded by wild Mediterranean herbs and baking spices. It's polished, yet dense, the tannins lining the lingering finish like cocoa powder. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink nowBruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that is aged in oak for 15 months. The wine shows depth, concentration and generous fruit weight that adds to the intensity and the textural importance of this abundant, full-bodied expression. Late-season rains threw some challenges at the winemakers of Bolgheri, but this open-knit wine has emerged unscathed.Drink 2021 - 2030monica_larner, Wine Advocate (May 2021)

Le Serre Nuove's approachable style comes from younger vines or those on lighter, sandier soils, whilst retaining its potential to age in bottle. 2018 brought useful winter dormancy, provocative spring deluges, hot August flushes, and cool, calming harvest nights. It's a sophisticated red with smooth, Ornellaia-esque appeal in a lighter key. Its forward-flowing, velvety fruit is well defined, clear, persistent and easy to engage with. Tannins from both fruit and oak are integrated and in sync.Drink 2021 - 2031Monty Waldin, Decanter.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Le Serre Nuove shows the restrained style of the year in its nuanced personality. Sweet floral and spice notes add perfume to this super-expressive Serre Nuove. Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and mocha are nicely delineated throughout. In some recent vintages, Serre Nuove has leaned towards the more exuberant side of things. I have to say, I like this more moderate expression very much. The 2018 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine.antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com (July 2019)

About this wine

Ornellaia

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village the view extends far out to sea and on a clear day the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen. The mild maritime climate and  the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, microvinification and ageing.
