2018 Château Talbot, Multiformat Case (4x75cl, 2x150cl, 1x300cl)

Description

Crafted from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, this vintage marks a new chapter at Talbot under the expert guidance of our friend Jean-Michel Laporte. In his debut vintage, Laporte has reimagined Talbot’s character, seeking to amplify the richness and depth of the mid-palate. By increasing extraction during the initial stages of fermentation and enhancing the influence of new oak by 10%, he has brought an unmistakable sense of grandeur to the wine. The result is a bold, layered expression of Talbot—deeply coloured, with plush, velvety tannins and an opulent mouthfeel, exuding dark berry fruits, subtle spice, and a long, luxurious finish. It’s arguably one of the finest Talbots in recent memory, embodying a sophisticated, more sumptuous style.

This estate is on a roll and the 2018 Château Talbot might just be the best yet. A deep purple/blue color is followed by a mammoth-sized bouquet of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, tobacco, and lead pencil. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, it nevertheless stays pure, balanced, and elegant, with a beautiful finish. Its tannins are ripe and integrated, it has balancing acidity, and this is unquestionably another beautiful vintage for this estate. Jeb Dunnock

About this wine

Chateau Talbot

Château Talbot is one of the best-known Bordeaux wine estates to a UK audience, not surprisingly because it takes its name from John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, who in 1453 suffered the ignominy of losing the  battle, and with it his life, which allowed Bordeaux and its vineyards to slip back into French control after belonging to the British Crown for over 340 years. In the last century it has been owned by the Cordier family, and the red wine of the estate has long enjoyed a reputation for solid dependability. It is one of the largest estates in the Médoc and its 102 hectare single vineyard is situated inland from the Gironde River and west of the hamlet of St-Julien-Beychevelle.
