2018 Clos Blanc de Vougeot, 1er Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy

Description

Sylvie Poillot, General Manager, farms the estate’s 42 hectares biodynamically. “We do this to preserve the fertility of soils, and to have a very good balance between the soil and the plant’s health,” she explains. It’s not just the soil health that’s changed: two decades on from their conversion to biodynamics, the wines are evolving too: “The wines are more aromatic and more expressive year after year,” she says.

A monopole, this vineyard has been home to white grapes since 1110, when it was first planted by the monks of Citeaux. A beguiling and intriguing wine, it is taut and cocooned in youth, yet fulsomely aromatic with time. There’s a touch of cream in 2018. Drink 2023-2032.

The 2018 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot, due for bottling at the end of April with just one or two bâtonnages, has a delightful bouquet with notes of citrus fruit, praline and a touch of white chocolate. The elegant palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity and moderate weight, that soupçon of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc lending a little more complexity on the finish than if it was pure Chardonnay. Very fine.Drink 2021 - 2033Neil Martin, Vinous.com.com (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, peach, orange oil and a generous but not overpowering application of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, its textural attack segues into a tangy, vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a saline finish. As readers will remember, small percentages of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc complement Chardonnay in this cuvée.Drink 2022 - 2040William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

About this wine

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
