2018 Almaviva, Maipo Valley, Chile

Description

This vintage of Almaviva has a uniquely savoury nose for its age. Smoky bacon, tomato leaf and leather can easily be identified alongside blackcurrant, bramble fruit from the high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The palette is lifted by high acidity and structurally, 2018 Almaviva is impressive. Medium to full bodied with grippy tannins indicates that this needs more time in the cellar. 2018 Almaviva has something special about it, and out of many wines, it really stood out. Drink 2021-2030.

Critics reviews

James Suckling 98/100
This is such a beautifully nuanced red with tobacco, dried herbs, wet earth and currants. Some leather and rose petals, too. Full-bodied and chewy, yet refined with great polish. It’s rich and intense at the same time. Very focused center palate. Broad layers of tannin and fruit. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better after 2024, but already a joy to taste.james_suckling
