2017 Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Pierre Damoy, Burgundy

Description

A relatively high-toned nose features an array of red cherry, pomegranate, spice, wood and a whisper of the Sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious, punchy and mineral-driven medium-weight plus flavours where the impressively long finish is less youthfully austere than usual. With that said, this is far from precocious so be prepared to be patient.

Chambertin chez Damoy is not so much about finesse as power. It needs time for the wood and wine tannins to marry. The nose is getting there, the wine is quite powerful, quite succulent, still a little youthful wood tannin bitterness.Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com (March 2019)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
