2017 Vosne-Romanée, Benjamin Leroux, Burgundy

Description

The fruit here comes from Maizières-Basses and some Les Violettes to the north of the appellation (actually in Flagey) and Raviolles at the southern end, bordered south and west by Nuits-St Georges. The contrasting styles combine for a textbook Vosne, suave and rich, abetted by 50 percent whole-bunch. Drink 2020-2024.

Mid to deep crimson. Spicy and almost a touch exotic on the nose. And a sweetness of spice and dark red fruit. Chewy and creamy on the palate. Generous in fruit and light in structure but all making a whole. Pure and gentle but persistent.Drink 2022 - 2028julia_harding MW, JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village, one of Leroux’s largest cuvées at 31 barrels, a large proportion sourced from Flagey-Echézeaux, has a fragrant bouquet with white flowers complementing the red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate displays supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, silky-smooth texture and a tart red cherry and orange peel finish that is quite spicy on the aftertaste. Good potential.Drink 2021 - 2033Neil Martin, Vinous.com.com (Jan 2019)

Ben Leroux has produced a series of textbook wines in 2017, with clear differences between the terroirs and villages. This sees two-thirds whole-bunch fruit - the portion that comes from the Aux Ravioles lieu-dit close to the border with Nuits-St-Georges is destemmed - and is matured in one-third new oak. It's brimming with sappy, juicy red berry flavours and beguiling sweetness.Drink 2020 - 2027Tim Atkin MW, Decanter.com (Nov 2018)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Benjamin Leroux

Having created a name for himself as régisseur (general manager) of Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard, Benjamin Leroux established, with English backing, a small négociant business based in Beaune since 2007. The range is confined to the Côte d’Or, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin, with the intention of developing farming contracts or indeed purchasing vineyards in the future. The possibilities are very exciting for this exceptionally talented vigneron. Benjamin is a master at delivering purity of fruit alongside a seamless texture in his wines which have only the subtlest influence of oak. One of Benjamin’s favourite locations for white wine vineyards is the border between Auxey-Duresses and Meursault, which is where Les Vireuils can be found. Here the natural weight of Meursault is enhanced by the fresher minerality typical of the side valley of Auxey-Duresses.
