Description
A combination of altitude, east-facing exposure and its position on a steep, raw calcareous soils create a wine with incredible focus, finesse and power. There’s a richly scented perfume and a deeper breadth of palate compared to many vintages, but this is first and foremost a wine of its place: there’s taut verticality, fine tannins and energetic purity.

Critics reviews
Stephen Blandford 92/100
Garnet colour. Fleshy damson plum, dried herbs, new leather, fennel and a touch of dried meat vie for attention on the bouquet, mocha oak in the background. The wine is quite expansive in the mouth, plum liqueur and prune with complementary savouriness, even some balsamic notes, the tannins pronounced though ripe. It is not lacking in power and character.Drink 2024 - 2039Stephen Blandford, The Real Review (April 2021)

This is linear and taut, with a chalky matrix of tannins underneath cherry, strawberry, eucalyptus and tar notes. The tannins gain the upper hand on the finish for now, yet this red is complex and long. 500 cases made.Drink 2025 - 2042Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (December 2021)

The 2017 Barolo Serra is bright, nervy and full of energy. Readers will find a Serralunga Barolo built more on persistence than heft, not a bad thing for a village where the wines can be quite big. Chalk, white pepper, orange zest and spice give the Serra its characteristic brightness.Drink 2024 - 2037antonio_galloni, Vinous.com (September 2021)

From another prized vineyard site in Serralunga d'Alba, the Giovanni Rosso 2017 Barolo Serra is balanced and bright, with dark cherry fruit, crème de cassis, baked clay and rusty mineral. Those more ferrous aromas are followed by a pretty hint of blue flower or dried lavender. This is a nicely textured, mid to full-weight Barolo to hold in your cellar.Drink 2024 - 2042monica_larner, Wine Advocate (June 2021)

About this wine
Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Giovanni Rosso
Davide Rosso took over from his father, Giovanni, in the early 2000s. He has since risen quickly in reputation as one of Piedmont’s greatest producers. He may not have the uninterrupted winemaking history of some of his famous neighbours, but he is the envy of many: he has some of the most desirable vineyards in Barolo – Serralunga d’Alba, Cerretta, Serra – showcasing the vivid terroir of his beloved hometown.
