2016 Barolo, Ester Canale Rosso, Vigna Rionda, Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Hailed as one of Barolo’s finest vineyards, Vigna Rionda is the equivalent of a Grand Cru, where the stars align on Serralunga d’Alba’s western flank. Sitting at 360 metres altitude, it combines perfect exposure, soil, altitude and old vines, planted in 1946 by Davide’s grandfather. Polished, mineral and ethereal, the 2011 is full-bodied, precise, elegant and supple. This is a magical wine worthy of the highest acclaim and needs time before showing us its true character. Drink 2025-45.

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Giovanni Rosso

Davide Rosso took over from his father, Giovanni, in the early 2000s. He has since risen quickly in reputation as one of Piedmont’s greatest producers. He may not have the uninterrupted winemaking history of some of his famous neighbours, but he is the envy of many: he has some of the most desirable vineyards in Barolo – Serralunga d’Alba, Cerretta, Serra – showcasing the vivid terroir of his beloved hometown.
