2016 Barolo, Serra, Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This extreme vineyard, just next door to the winery, has once again come up trumps. The combination of excruciatingly steep slopes, poor calcareous soil and cool, easterly exposition creates a singular wine of incredible finesse. Taut and sinewy with real energy and drive, it is light in colour but very aromatic, with complex layers of peach, orange peel, pepper and meat. It has very fine talcum tannins and a crunchy finish. Drink 2025-2045.

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Giovanni Rosso

Davide Rosso took over from his father, Giovanni, in the early 2000s. He has since risen quickly in reputation as one of Piedmont’s greatest producers. He may not have the uninterrupted winemaking history of some of his famous neighbours, but he is the envy of many: he has some of the most desirable vineyards in Barolo – Serralunga d’Alba, Cerretta, Serra – showcasing the vivid terroir of his beloved hometown.
