This comes from the oldest Sangiovese vines (plus a dollop of Petit Verdot), fermented in open-top wooden vats before going into barriques for for two years, and then into large casks for a shorter spell. The rich cherry nose is still reticent, in contrast to the palate which is broad and succulent. It's very concentrated and majestic, with firm acidity that tightens up the palate. The Isole et Olena Estate, run by Paolo de Marchi for 45 years, is a Tuscan property that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades.
