Monica Larner 93/100
To be released in October 2016, the 2014 Bianco Ornellaia is a beautifully luminous and brilliant white wine. Last year's inaugural edition was 70/30 Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, but this year's release sees only 15% Viognier and a small percentage (from 5-7%) of Petit Manseng. I want to point out that I'm noticing a very interesting upswing of Petit Manseng in Coastal Tuscany. This new composition results in a wine with a rich and broad approach and a less pointed or floral bouquet. Instead of those more common and banal tropical fruit aromas, this wine offers a fascinating medley of stone fruit, viennoiserie pastry and crushed mineral. Only 4,000 bottles are produced.Monica Larner - 28/10/2016

About this wine

Sauvignon Blanc

An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp  Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.

Ornellaia

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is located in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions: Bolgheri. A breathtaking avenue lined by towering cypress trees leads inland from the Aurelia, the old Roman coastal road, up to the walls of Bolgheri’s medieval hamlet. From the village the view extends far out to sea and on a clear day the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica can be seen. The mild maritime climate and  the lush Mediterranean vegetation leave an imprint upon the character of the wines. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia's unique territory guides all aspects of production: limited quantities to ensure maximum quality, attention to every detail, selective hand harvesting, microvinification and ageing.
