Description
The Rostaing philosophy of zero destemming, which is currently so modish, can make his youthful wines appear, at first, quite raw and structured. Neither of these epithets sounds particularly appealing, yet the overall impression is positive, powerful, refined and classy, these positive adjectives definitely taking the longer perspective.

Gnomic and somewhat whimsical at times, René has been playing his own tune for 43 vintages and shows little sign of abdicating. The Dauphin, Pierre, is now firmly and patiently ensconced. All the grapes were destemmed in 2013 and the harvest was not completed until October 13th; quality is good however, very good indeed. Moving to the 2013s, this vintage was described as "opulent" by Rene, which I found surprising, that is, until I tasted his wines. I was blown away by the quality here, and few other estates managed to get this level or richness and texture. The 2013 Cote Rotie Ampodium has an old-school feel in its cracked pepper, leather, violets, damp earth and sweet black raspberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, has notable tannin, yet ample depth, richness and length. This beauty will have 10-15 years of longevity.

Jeb Dunnuck 92/100
The 2013 Cote Rotie Ampodium, which was just bottled prior to this tasting, is gorgeous. The wine is made from 100% Syrah from two top terroirs, Cote Blonde and Landonne, and aged all in Burgundy barrels; it has terrific notes of black raspberries, blackberries, crushed violets and dried flowers in a surprisingly forward, nicely concentrated, textured style that can be enjoyed anytime over the coming decade or more.jeb_dunnuck - 31/12/2015
About this wine
Syrah/Shiraz
A noble black grape variety grown particularly in the Northern Rhône where it produces the great red wines of Hermitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas, and in Australia where it produces wines of startling depth and intensity. Reasonably low yields are a crucial factor for quality as is picking at optimum ripeness. Its heartland, Hermitage and Côte Rôtie, consists of 270 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards producing wines that brim with pepper, spices, tar and black treacle when young. After 5-10 years they become smooth and velvety with pronounced fruit characteristics of damsons, raspberries, blackcurrants and loganberries. It is now grown extensively in the Southern Rhône where it is blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the great red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas amongst others. Its spiritual home in Australia is the Barossa Valley, where there are plantings dating as far back as 1860. Australian Shiraz tends to be sweeter than its Northern Rhône counterpart and the best examples are redolent of new leather, dark chocolate, liquorice, and prunes and display a blackcurrant lusciousness. South African producers such as Eben Sadie are now producing world- class Shiraz wines that represent astonishing value for money.
