Description
One hundred percent old-vine Grenache, Mon Aieul is an old-vine power-house, its 15 degrees of alcohol worn relatively lightly, its purity and power entirely as a result of the quality of the fruit, as there is no oak in its up-bringing; one for the longer term, this will strut and fret for a few years before a most poignant maturity.

The Usseglio scions in Châteauneuf-du-Pape are nothing if not complicated; the names of both Domaines allude to the second generation but it is now the third generation in charge, in this case Thierry and Jean-Pierre….the wines, thankfully, are easy to understand; traditional of persuasion, the property describes itself as a ‘Maison de Grenache’ a house which is attempting to make wines that are as silky as they are robust.

Similar in style to the 2006, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is rounded and textured, with tons of charm in its blackberry, black raspberry, violets, garrigue and spice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, supple and textured, it shows the vintage's upfront and forward character, yet has beautiful purity of fruit and enough density to drink nicely through 2027. Most 2012s are already showing nicely, and this is no exception.jeb_dunnuck - 14/09/2015
About this wine
Domaine Pierre Usseglio
This first class domaine is now run by Pierre Usseglio's sons Jean-Pierre and Thierry. It has recently expanded with the purchase of seven hectares of vines that Jean-Pierre had previously worked en metayage. The vineyards are split into three separate plots of vineyards in the La Crau, Serres and Le Bedine subzones of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are old with an average age of 80 years and are planted with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Roussanne.
