2012 Château Gruaud Larose, St Julien, Bordeaux

Description

2012 is a very solid showing for this historic Second Growth. A meaty, toasty nose is balanced with currants and blueberry. The palate is fleshier and more forward than many, with generous fruit but enough tannins to keep everything in check. Plum and cherry fruit is coated by a creamy spice from the oak and this is a very generous effort that may very well drink sooner than most. If the pricing is as competitive as usual from the Château, then this is one to keep in mind.

Critics reviews

Robert Parker 89/100
A nice, earthy, black fruited, spicy and meaty 2012 Gruaud Larose, with medium body, excellent depth, chunky roasted herb and aged beef notes, this wine finishes authoritatively and the tannins are reasonably ripe. Give it another 3-5 years cellaring and drink it over the following 15 or so years.Robert M. Parker, Jr. - 30/04/2015

Fine Cabernet Sauvignon cassis nose, suave and velvety in the Gruaud style, already showing quite exotic fruit, but there is deep fruit and grip here, class and finesse along with the vigour.

Solid, delivering a beam of cassis, plum and blackberry fruit lined with graphite and ganache notes. This has solid flesh through the finish and good energy overall. james_molesworth, Wine Spectator, April 8 2013

Saint-Julien

Saint-Julien

St Julien is the smallest of the ‘Big Four’ Médoc communes although, without any First Growths, it is recognised to be the most consistent of the main communes with many châteaux turning out impressive wines year after year. The wines can be judged as much by texture as flavour, and there is a sleek, wholesome character to the best. At their very finest they combine Margaux’s elegance and refinement with Pauillac’s power and substance.
