2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Réserve Auguste Favier, Domaine Saint Préfert, Rhône

Description

This delightful blend of  85% Grenache and 15% Cinsault is named after one of Isabel’s forebears, it seems. Its oratory is subtle with floral aromatics and hints of lavender and a Provençal market-place, then savoury notes on the mid-palate lending gravitas and complexity.
Simon Field MW, Rhône Wine Buyer

The effervescent Isabel Ferando is relatively traditional in her winemaking, in terms of de-stemming, cuvaison and such things. Her commercial acumen, however, leads her down the path of multiple cuvées, and a very attractive path it is in 2012, with each wine intriguingly different.

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 18/20
Lieu-dit: Les Serres. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault. Concrete and demi-muids. Blueish crimson. Very fresh and ethereal on the nose and then with great richness underneath finishing up with ripe tannins so the overall impression is not too sweet. Lots going on here! jancis_robinson_mw MW, jancisrobsinson.com - Jan 2014

Deeper and more concentrated, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth, the 2012 Chteauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier (70% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 5% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre) has fabulous purity in its blackberry, currants, black licorice, roasted herbs and assorted meatiness. Possessing ultra-fine tannin and building underlying structure, it will benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar and evolve gracefully through 2027.jeb_dunnuck - 31/10/2014

About this wine

Domaine Saint Prefert

Domaine St Préfert is yet another Châteauneuf-du-Pape A-lister on our ever-expanding Rhône wine range. Isabel Ferrando’s vines are mainly located in the southern sector; her modus operandus is fairly traditional with no destemming, cement tank maturation and a taste for déléstage. Her outlook and temperament, however, fall into the more modern camp, as manifested by the multiplicity of differing ‘cuvées’, all, thankfully pleasingly different from each other. Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Classique comes from (relatively) younger vines and is a blend of 85% Grenache and 5% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. It is a charming showcase for Grenache at is most bounteous; Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Reserve Auguste Favier is a charming blend of Grenache and 15% Cinsault. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Giraud includes 38% of Mourvèdre that adds dark-fruit power and spicy, savoury tannins.
