2011 Chambertin, Grand Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

A blend made from two complementary sources, this is always a wine to look out for. Forceful, with lovely cherry notes behind, it really builds in the mouth with quite a gentle, gracious aspect at first before a more forceful, steely aspect kicks in. Excellent.
Jasper Morris MW, Berrys' Burgundy Director These are brilliant wines once again from David Croix and his team at Camille Giroud and fortunately they were able to make a little more wine this year than last. Alhough the white selection is small, the wines are just as fine as the reds. David has made some inspirational wines from less fancied appellations such as Maranges and Santenay, as well as majoring on the Grands Crus of Corton and the Chambertins. Almost all of the wines are from purchased grapes, but somehow Camille Giroud feels to us much more like a domaine.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 92/100
Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Although there is a lot of oak on the nose of the 2011 Chambertin, it has plenty of red and black fruit on the nose with an attractive floral scent that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, gently grippy tannins and an impressive symmetry and poise toward the finish. It does not quite have the finesse of others, but I suspect that will develop with bottle age.Neil Martin - 30/11/2014

Mid to deep crimson. Firm, subtle, polished and surprisingly approachable. More red fruit with spice on the back palate. Gentle, very very long. More to come. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com - Jan 2013

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
