2011 Charmes-Chambertin, Les Mazoyères, Grand Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy

Description

The vineyards lie on the border to Morey St Denis and the vines are among the oldest in appellation having been planted over 100 years ago. The nose oozes with seductive pure fruit and the palate has a tightly wound structure which opens slowly to an explosive crescendo with sensual sweet fruit.
Fine Wine Team

With an explosive nose and just a touch of oak, there is a magical richness of fruit right across the finish of this wine. It has amazing length and just a little touch of pepper. Ancient vines are certainly producing excellent wine here.

Pierre Vincent’s reputation has been blossoming over the last few vintages, as critic’s rate his wines increasingly highly and repeated success at the International Wine Challenge has been rewarded with the Len Evans Trophy for consistency over 5 years. Pierre is looking to major on delicacy while building persistence, to which end the new oak component is being reduced and the whole bunch fermentation percentage increased. The Vougeraie 2011s were picked over 12 days, beginning on the 31st August..

Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 90/100
Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyeres Grand Cru 2011 from Domaine de la Vougeraie has an exquisite bouquet that leaps from the glass with ebullient red cherries, fresh strawberry and pomegranate scents that are nicely detailed, the oak assiduously interwoven. The palate is very sweet and candied on the entry, possibly a little over-ripe. There is a lot of red fruit here, almost sorbet-like in quality, with sufficient freshness and acidity to maintain balance. This is the most typical Charmes-Chambertin in the line-up with a long, persistent, orange zest and spicy finish that is quite bullish.Neil Martin - 30/11/2014

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
