Description
Mirroring the dark granitic rocks peering down on the village on Kayserberg, the Faller family's famous vineyard Schlossberg is underpinned by granite soils, bringing a real sense of stature and poise to the wine. Naturally more concentrated than previous years due to the loss of up to 40% of fruit at flowering, this is the Faller's flagship Riesling, topped only by 'L'Inedit'. It speaks of a family whose whole being is bound up with the symbiosis between the granite rocks and Riesling. Given the small but high quality fruit, this is a dry wine that would benefit from a decade's ageing in a dark cellar, so drinking at its best from 2018/20 till 2030 say.

David Schildknecht 92/100
Issuing as usual from old vines in the kidney of the slope, Weinbach's 2010 Riesling Schlossberg Cuvee Sainte Catherine does not have to share fruit or prestige this year with a l'Inedit variant, as the Fallers elected in this vintage of vinous scarcity not to render that other, characteristically off-dry and botrytis-tinged bottling of Schlossberg Sainte Catherine. We have here a riot of lemon, tangerine and white peach in an intense nose and brightly juicy, firm, full and dense - yet in no way austere - palate. A touch of the inner-mouth floral perfume strikingly exhibited by this year's regular Schlossberg is present in this Sainte Catherine cuvee as well, though it may well be that the upper-elevation parcels informing the former conduce to greater florality. Piquancy of pit and rind meet peppery incisiveness, crystalline stoniness and mouthwatering salinity in a penetrating and energetically interactive finish. Anticipate continued excitement through 2035.David Schildknecht - 28/08/2014
About this wine
Riesling
Riesling's twin peaks are its intense perfume and its piercing crisp acidity which it manages to retain even at high ripeness levels.
