2007 Château la Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Description

This is one of the very few `wow' wines in 2007 with a jaw-dropping concentration, exotic richness and complexity that mark it out as one of the wines of the vintage. The 15% Cabernet Franc (along with 85% Merlot) has bestowed this Conseillante with a stunning, elegantly floral nose of blackcurrant coulis and spice. The palate is even better, with sumptuous creamy blackberries, raspberry sorbet and a lovely minerality all supported by substantial velvety tannins. Aristocratic, feminine and irresistible, this will happily age for more than 15 years. So when should you drink it? That's easy: as often as possible.

Critics reviews

Jancis Robinson MW 16/20
"Quite dark crimson. Very fruity, polished nose. Extremely supple with tannins you really have to concentrate to discern. Sweet, voluptuous start and then a streak of greenness on the palate (notable both times I tasted it). Light and flirtatious with only just enough substance for the grandeur of this property's grand vin." jancis_robinson_mw - www.JancisRobinson.com - Apr 08

This is back to the traditional style of La Conseillante with fruit and finesse to the fore (less power than 2006 and 2005). Lovely purity of fruit and just the right balance for the year.

About this wine

Merlot

The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.
