2007 Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche, Grand Cru, Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy

Description

Comprising two whole hectares, the fortunate Marquis de Laguiche has the biggest holding by far in Le Montrachet. This incredible wine starts quietly but then a sensational weight of fruit floods the palate, all but eclipsing anything that has gone before. The wine is perfectly poised, for all its power, but will need another decade before the thought of drinking it should even cross the mind.

Almonds on the nose, then great richness and vibrancy even if not quite the depth of some vintages. Very racy. Some green citrus fruit flavours and great length.jancis_robinson_mw MW, JancisRobinson.com (June 2009)

Initially this was notably restrained and required some 20 minutes to really get going with its beautifully layered array of citrus, white flowers, pear, soft wood and subtle spice nuances. The sleek and sophisticated medium-bodied flavors possess ample minerality and excellent vibrancy along with impressive depth on the focused finale that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is a more modestly-scaled Montrachet of finesse and refinement rather than power and muscle. For my taste it is just now knocking on the front door of its prime maturity though I underscore that it could easily be held for years to come. In sum, this is an understated Montrachet of class and grace.Ready to drink nowallen_meadows, burghound_com.com (August 2017)

Very ripe aromas of apricot and smoky oak. Big, rich and sweet, with sexy hints of smoke, nutmeg and brown sugar. Tactile and chewy but without any excess weight. This big boy seems accessible already but offers enticing high notes for such a ripe wine. The smoky oak element recurs on the back end. This will need time to show its inherent soil complexity.Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com.com (September 2009)

The truly amazing 2007 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche is a Vinous.com work of art. Still incredibly young, the 2007 offers a tight core of remarkably pure pomaceous orchard fruit, lemony minerality and a hint of waxy butteriness that is hard to forget. An infant but already splendid, the 2007 is going to develop into something even more memorable than it already is.Drink 2018 - 2032Ian D'Agata, Vinous.com.com (March 2018)

The 2007 Montrachet Marquies de Laguiche exudes decadent lily and musk oil aromas; practically detonates on the palate with ripe peach and a puff of brown spices and smoke; offers a seductively creamy and expansive amalgam of nut oils, honey, and pasted orchard fruits; and reverberates in a finish with tactile chalk dust, fruit skin, brown spice and citrus zest impingement. Here is a marvelous example of concentration allied to elegance and in keeping with its vintage in general and especially chez Drouhin an unusually forward and youthfully seductive exemplar of its appellation, but one I certainly anticipate will gain in complexity in coming years and to be worth following for a dozen or more.David Schildknecht - 22/12/2009

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
