2006 Riesling, Clos Ste Hune, Trimbach, Alsace

Description

The quality of this much sought-after dry Riesling stems from Trimbach’s 1.67ha walled ‘clos’ within Hunawihr’s Grand Cru Rosacker, which, arguably more significantly still, shares the same soil as (Zind-Humbrecht’s) Clos Windsbuhl and those of Puligny-Montracht: the mushelcalk, an inactive calcium limestone.

The result is a wet stone purity permeating throughout the wine, giving it a fabulously racy quality, despite the trickier 2006 season, whose torrid final months have provided a tropical, slightly mushroom character.

Critics reviews

Fresh lime, yellow plum, musk, and intimations of chalk dust in the nose of Trimbachs 2006 Riesling Clos Ste-Hune usher in a strikingly fresh, firm palate possessed of meat stock and game-like animal undertones. This bottling of barely over 12.5% in alcohol is much more tightly-stitched than the corresponding Frederic Emile, and finishes with penetrating, bright length, combined with overtly crushed stone minerality. No Alsace 2006 of my experience can top this for focus, clarity, or long-term (I would estimate 12-15 years) aging potential, although the Frederic Emile is in its very different way more striking, as well as more fun to drink now.David Schildknecht - 27/04/2010

About this wine

Riesling

Riesling's twin peaks are its intense perfume and its piercing crisp acidity which it manages to retain even at high ripeness levels.

Trimbach

The House of Trimbach was established in 1626 and is now being run by the 12th generation of the family, Pierre and Jean. The family supervises all operations from planting and vinification to selection and bottling, giving them 100% control over production. If Zind Humbrecht produces wines of extravagant power at one end of the spectrum of excellence within Alsace wine making, then Trimbach definitely stands at the other extreme – “Restraint” is the watchword. The Trimbach style is paraphrased perfectly by Hubert Trimbach and the family itself – “Concentrated not heavy; fruity, not sweet; bracing rather than fat; polite rather than voluptuous". Trimbach wines are reserved, steely, elegant, even aristocratic; never obvious or flashy. "We are Protestants. Our wines have the Protestant style – vigour, firmness, a beautiful acidity, lovely freshness. Purity and cleanness, that’s Trimbach.” For those weary of the copious residual sugar found in so many of the contemporary Alsace wines, Trimbach’s are a refuge.
