2003 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, St Julien, Bordeaux

Description

The 2003 vintage sees Bruno Borie and his sister Sabine as chatelaines of Ducru-Beaucaillou, while their brother François-Xavier concentrates on the other family-owned classed growths, Ch. Grand- Puy-Lacoste and Ch. Haut-Batailley. The 2003 vintage also sees a shift towards a more generous style of wine, although the châteaus characteristic charm and modesty remain reassuringly evident. With wonderfully opulent, zesty fruit matched with classy, spicy oak on the nose, this more amicable style will appeal to many. Ducrus 2003 is one of the great successes of the vintage.

Critics reviews

Robert Parker 94/100
A hot, dry summer resulted in a tiny production of under 10,000 cases of 2003 Ducru Beaucaillou from yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare. This beauty boasts a deep plum/ruby/purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge. Aromas of licorice, creme de cassis, incense and spring flowers are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine with loads of fruit and glycerin as well as a plush texture. It is just entering its plateau of maturity where it should remain for another 10-15 years.Robert M. Parker, Jr. - 28/08/2014

About this wine

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a St-Julien property that today is one of the leading Super Seconds. It is owned by the Borie family and is situated in the south-east of the St-Julien appellation. Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 5%) lie on deep, large-stone gravel beds enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are matured in oak barriques (50-60% new) for 18 months. For many, Ducru-Beaucaillou is the quintessential St-Julien - deep-coloured, powerful, ripe, exquisitely well-balanced and perfectly harmonious. It requires a minimum of 10 years of bottle ageing before it should be approached and the best vintages will continue improving for many more years. Ducru-Beaucaillou is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.
