Description
Made from 62% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, La Mission proffers a magnificent nose of roasted meat, chocolate, herbs, truffles, and above all a beautiful blast of pure, sweet, black fruit. The palate has a glorious vein of rich cassis flavours in perfect harmony with ripe tannins, good acidity and a wonderful weight. Less ostentatious than the mighty 2000, if anything this is more charming with a more defined structure. Sensational. Again. Drink 2010-2030

Perhaps one of the more overlooked vintages in recent years, the Chteau La Mission Haut-Brion 2001 is one of the finest wines of the vintage. Here, one is immediately taken aback by the precision exuded by the nose: small dark cherries and orange blossom still there, perhaps the mineralit more heightened than ever. The palate displays exquisite balance with nigh on perfect acidity, demonstrating more tension, if not the dimension of the 1990 tasted alongside. This is a serious La Mission for long-term aging. About this wine
Chateau la Mission Haut-Brion
Château La Mission-Haut-Brion is the greatest Graves wine after Haut-Brion and in some vintages is considered the superior wine of the two. La Mission-Haut-Brion is situated just across the road from Haut-Brion in the commune of Talence in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. Since 1983, both properties have been under the same ownership, Domaine Clarence Dillon S.A. La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.
