After thirty years of maturing undisturbed in wind-battered warehouses at Bruichladdich, this golden dram provides all I could want from such a venerable treat. A quietly composed nose of saturated oak and dried orchard fruits blooms handsomely into a broad, expansive whisky, filling the mouth with fruit, wood and generous sweetness still present from that long-forgotten sun-drenched barley field. No gimmicks on display here, just the warm embrace of a charming old friend.

Bruichladdich Distillery, Islay

Bruichladdich was built in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers and sits on Islay’s wild, west Atlantic coast. With a chequered past involving several corporate mergers, it was eventually closed in 1994 as it was found to be “surplus to requirements”. Resurrected in 2000 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Jim McEwan, it was voted Distillery of the Year three times and became known for its challenging convention.
