Tequila Patrón was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley. The brand’s headquarters is located in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, and the tequila itself is produced in Mexico, in the state of Jalisco, the only region where authentic tequila can be made.

Mexico boasts a rich tradition of spirit-making, centring on tequila and mezcal. Tequila, derived from blue agave, undergoes a regulated process in regions like Jalisco, yielding varieties such as blanco and añejo. Mezcal, made from various agave species, mainly thrives in Oaxaca and is known for its unique smoky flavour. Both spirits hold cultural significance, and the rise of premium and craft varieties has spurred the growth of small-batch distilleries.
